They say “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” Whoever coined this phrase couldn’t have expected Lone Star State death dealers, Church of Disgust. Their latest EP, Consumed by Slow Putrefaction, is bigger than big. It’s gigantic. 3 songs and 11 minutes is all Church of Disgust needs to bludgeon us with beefy, ignorant riffs.
The first two songs, the title track and “Drowned in Eldritch Slime”, are solid, mid paced death metal, tailor made for the mosh pit before slowing to a dragging crawl. I’m usually the first to disapprove of a breakdown. By now it’s practically cliche. However, when done correctly, a breakdown can accomplish its aim of being a lethal, devastating attack on the listener’s senses. You know those riffs: Those slow, nasty ones that make you nod, all while displaying a cringing face of approval. Church of Disgust has you covered. My favorite track is the last and most deadly, “Burst Coffin”. The breakdown riffing I refer to in the previous songs are utilized to their fullest on this one. Now I understand why the word “slow” is included in the EP title. This is some caveman slamming shit if I ever heard it.
Short and anything but sweet, Consumed by Slow Putrefaction will have you lifting weights, dragging knuckles, and clubbing posers upon the head while exclaiming “Uga!”. If not for the rest of the year, it certainly will for this weekend.
