Midnight Dice – Hypnotized

Midnight Dice gets better with each release. Formed out of the ashes of Satan’s Hallow, the Chicago metal machine released their debut demo last year. I enjoyed it, though not nearly as much as others. A surprise split with local favorites Hitter was a step in the right direction. With the arrival of their debut EP, Hypnotized, I can proudly say I’ve jumped aboard the Midnight Dice train.

Hypnotized is a throwback to a simpler time before subgenres of subgenres. Once upon a time, you were either metal or you weren’t and Midnight Dice most certainly is. The EP opens with the moody Maiden-esque instrumental intro that is the ironically titled “Farewell”. From there, it’s the high speed overload of “Starblind” and “Speed City”. Both are no frills headbangers with the attitude and production of early Warlock. Double bass drums, energetic riffing, and the vocal heroics of frontwoman Mandy Martillo lead the way. Throw in some deliciously flashy 80s infused guitar solos and you’re in metal heaven.

The following two songs, “Hypnotized” and “Lazer Eyes”, are my favorites. Both are mid tempo, meat and potatoes metal with a serious nod to “Zee Scorpions” (as Klaus Meine would say). “Hypnotized” reminds me of the Blackout era, whereas “Lazer Eyes” falls somewhere between Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism. Either way, guitarist Steve “Lethal” Beaudette was able to crank out two riffs more memorable than anything Rudolf Schenker has played in 35 years. Which is equally impressive (if you’re Beaudette) and sad (if you’re Schenker), but I digress.

If you like your metal with equal amounts speed and melody, Midnight Dice has you covered. At the rate they’ve progressed in the last year, I can only imagine what a full length has in store. Until then, it’s time to blast this one loud enough for the neighbors to hear!
