Hailing from Spain, War Dogs has a great appreciation for 80s US power metal. They wear their influences on their sleeves and do so without sounding like an imitation of the era’s finest. On their debut full length, Die by My Sword, War Dogs charge into battle, ready to take on the world. The album cover depicts the album title in fantastical fashion. This is music to slay your enemy to.
The album begins with the title track. It is one of the finest and memorable tracks on here with an anthemic chorus and blazing fretwork. War Dogs utilizes this mid paced power metal approach for about half of the album. The other half is speed metal as heard on “Wings of Fire”, “Ready to Strike”, and “Gorgon Eyes”. Unfortunately, these songs start to sound the same after a while and they don’t stand out as much as the mid tempo songs.
This is not to discount War Dogs’ musicianship. These guys have chops for days. What singer Alberto Rodriguez may lack in range he makes up for in depth and emotion. I appreciate that over somebody who can pointlessly shriek. The guitar work is excellent. From riffs to twin leads, the dynamic duo of Eduardo Antón and Enrique Mas can do it all.
This formula culminates in the highlight of the album, “The Shark”. A loving tribute to fallen Manilla Road frontman Mark “The Shark” Shelton, it is truly an anthem. Former Manilla Road singer Bryan Patrick serves as a special guest which makes it even more special.
There is room for growth for War Dogs in the songwriting department. However, don’t underestimate their musicianship. They are a force to be reckoned with and have the potential to become a major name in the metal underground. I look forward to seeing what the future holds.
