Condition Critical – Degeneration Chamber

Last Friday, a certain legendary thrash metal band who got outed for using A.I. generated artwork released their first studio album in 34 years: An album that I will NOT be reviewing. While there’s no denying said band still brings the house down as a live act, a song and a half into this “comeback” affair and I had to turn it off. The vocals were unbearable, the production was atrocious, and the guitars repeated a riff that sounded as A.I. as the artwork that graced the cover. In other words, this album was literally unlistenable. Besides, why would I bother trying to stomach such a release when a much more fulfilling thrash album like Condition Critical’s Degeneration Chamber dropped the same day?

For Condition Critical, this album too is a comeback. It’s been 9 long years since the release of their sophomore banger, Extermination Plan. I’m sure enough of you thrashers of a certain age are clutching your lower back through your Municipal Waste shirts after reading that sentence. To put it in perspective, when we last heard from Condition Critical, then affectionately nicknamed “Demolition Hammer Jr.”, Demo Hammer themselves hadn’t even returned to the live stage, let alone released any new music. Now, in 2025, Demo Hammer STILL hasn’t released any new music, so leave it to Jersey’s finest brutal thrash bruisers to fill the void.

Degeneration Chamber is an album that specializes in “more of the same” in the best way possible. Picking up right where Extermination Plan left off, the songs are fast, violent, and unrelenting. Classic era singer/guitarist Ryan Taylor is back behind the mic, barking out vocals over a never-ending barrage of muscular mosh riffs (which checks out considering this guy’s their guitarist) and Lombardo-flavored double bass drum devastation. “Wretched Aggression” comes storming in, boasting both maniacal speed and braindead breakdowns, setting the template for the 8 cuts that follow.

While some songs push the aggression dial to overload, occasionally channeling the brute force of classic death metal via techy riffs and blasting drums (i.e. “Psychological Epidemic”, “Cryonic Intestinal Preservation”), Degeneration Chamber is a pure thrash album through and through, emphasizing riffage and extremity above all. There is no room to breathe whatsoever, which again, is something I don’t just welcome from a release of this nature, but expect. The day Condition Critical “broadens their sonic palette” is the day I lose interest in this band.

Now my first listen to Degeneration Chamber took place while I was lifting weights at the gym, and I’d advise for the maximal listening experience that you do the same. This album was not made for you too sit back, relax, and drink your day away too. It was meant for pumping iron, starting a fistfight, and eating raw meat with your bare hands. OK, there might be some health risks involved with that last one, but you get the idea. It’s albums like Degeneration Chamber that remind you why Morbid Angel branded this “Extreme music for extreme people” in the first place, and there are very few more extreme than Condition Critical!
